Understanding the Reshape technology
Reshape is an exciting new option for weight loss candidates who desire a treatment less aggressive than bariatric surgery, but more effective than dieting and exercise. During treatment, a deflated dual-sphered balloon is inserted endoscopically through the mouth and tunneled down to the stomach where it is filled with sterile salt water. The implant keeps clients feeling satiated and full so that they are less tempted to overeat and more likely to shed the excess pounds. Total procedure time is approximately 30 minutes.
What makes Reshape an effective weight loss tool?
Reshape combines the best of bariatric procedures with the successful aspects of a personalized dietary coaching program, and all without resorting to invasive surgery. During the first phase, months 1 thru 6, the inflated silicone gastric balloon is present in the abdomen, giving the client a sensation of fullness. This wards off hunger and makes it possible to focus on learning portion control.
In phase two, months 6 thru 12, the device is removed, but Fresno patients continue to receive lifestyle coaching, meal planning, psychological support and input from a trained team of Athenix physicians. Although the patient is now balloon-free, the important changes from phase one are solidified, establishing a new healthy pattern of eating and exercise for the long term.
Your Athenix gastric balloon program in Fresno will include:
- The breakthrough Reshape dual-sphere technology
- Access to an online support community 24/7
- Customized meal plans and exercise routines to suit your preferences
- Individualized counseling from a caring team of physicians, nutritionists, psychologists, personal trainers and motivational life coaches
- Sustained follow-up sessions for up to 12 months
Am I a candidate for Reshape?
Like other gastric balloons, Reshape requires that clients be at least 18, have a BMI of around 30 to 40, and that they need to lose at least 25 lbs. Reshape differs however, by requiring the presence of a co-morbidity, which is an additional obesity-related health issue such as diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension or sleep apnea.
Contraindications for Reshape include drug or alcohol addiction; pregnancy or breastfeeding; previous bariatric surgery; refusal to participate in follow-up sessions; a physical intolerance to an endoscope; GI disorders; liver disease; use of aspirin or other inflammatory drugs; and as mentioned, a BMI of over 40.
Impressive results across all age groups
In clinical trials, the Reshape system showed that study goers lost twice as much weight as they did with conventional dieting methods and exercise. Not only that, many kept the weight off longer, thanks to Reshape’s two-phase lifestyle coaching structure, which supports patients even after the implant is removed.
Although results vary from person to person, Fresno Reshape clients can expect to lose anywhere from 10 to 35% of their total excess body weight, depending on BMI and the amount of effort put into participation.
Managing side effects with Reshape
Since Reshape is non-surgical, there is rarely any post-procedural pain or discomfort, and most clients return to work within 24 to 48 hours. The main side effect encountered in clinical trials was nausea, but this occurred in only 15% of participants to a significant level. If you do encounter nausea after balloon insertion, rest assured it will most likely pass within hours or days as your body slowly acclimates to the Reshape device.
Who is responsible for the Reshape technology?
Reshape originated from Reshape Medical Inc. (formerly named Abdominis), a San Clemente-located company established in 2005. Reshape Medical’s mission is to design safe, effective intragastric balloons that allow obese patients to slim down without invasive surgeries.
